1 Year Anniversary

It's been a year. One whole year. Actually, a year and one day as I write this.  A year since we said goodbye to family and close friends.  A year since we became temporary residents of another country.  The process of getting here started months before this anniversary, and what a whirlwind that was! But one year ago things changed in a big way.  Bigger than any of our other prior changes, and we've had a LOT of changes. We packed up, sold most everything we owned, stored the rest and made the move to Jamaica.

We honestly had no idea what to expect.  Adria told me the other day she thought there wasn't going to be cars and roads and big buildings.  She thought it was just going to be jungle.  Sorry kid, we may have let you down in that department, but I sure am glad we have those things!!

We were nervous about the uncertainty, but excited for the adventure, knowing that God had opened all the right doors, and closed others, that allowed us to come.

This year has absolutely flown by.  It has been filled with so much learning - learning a new culture, learning to drive on the other side of the road, learning to live without a dishwasher, learning how to make life "normal" for our kids in a very different environment, learning to let go of what we think is normal.  A rather challenging aspect of moving to another culture is learning how to blend your life and experiences with another culture.  Things that you disagree with or think may be wrong, aren't even a thought in other cultures.  Learning to accept that different isn't wrong, it's just different.

We have grown closer as a family and more dependent on God.  We have also made wonderful friends with homes all over the world (Dominican Republic, South Africa, Shri Lanka, New Zealand, Panama, Germany, Spain, India, just to name a few) - now we just need the time/money to visit everyone!!

Overall and despite the challenges, we are thankful for the adventure of the past year.  Looking forward to the next year, there will be lots more difficulties to overcome and learning to do.  As we finish the build out of the new clinic and operating space, open and start to utilize the surgery center, start "coaster" clinics to reach people all over the island, and expand the ministry, the tasks seem daunting.  Thankfully we serve a BIG God who is willing to use anyone as long as they are willing to learn and follow.  Also, we have a stellar team of Jamaicans and Ja'mericans, amazing friends, fellow missionaries, and a couple of great bosses to help thru the process and walk us back from the cliff when things get tough.

So here's to another year of learning!  Please pray we continue to have servant hearts in every situation.

Also, Mission of Sight and Professional Eye Care had a short documentary made about the mission work being done down here.  It is an amazing video that truly captures some highlights of our mission work down here.  If you haven't seen it, check it out below!
